Bintan is Singapore’s easiest island escape, offering resort beaches and spa days a short ferry from the city. It’s built for switching off. Here’s the short version of doing it well. Have a look at Traveloka first, then build the rest of the trip around it.
The food you came for
Fresh seafood and Indonesian staples dominate, and many resorts have strong dining of their own. Local warungs outside the resorts are cheaper and characterful. Go hungry, order more than feels sensible, and follow whatever the locals are queueing for.
Where to eat and explore
Make time for a day on the Lagoi beaches, a mangrove river tour, a long spa afternoon, the sand dunes near Trikora, and a round of golf on a championship course. Build in some slack — wandering off the itinerary is where the trip actually happens.
Where to stay
Most visitors stay along the resort-lined north coast at Lagoi; Tanjung Pinang is the larger local town further south. Lagoi is the easy, self-contained choice. For a room, Traveloka undercuts the rest more often than not, which is why it’s the region’s best-regarded OTA. Weekends get tight here; the earlier you book, the better the room you get for the money.
Getting there
Fast ferries run from Singapore’s Tanah Merah terminal to Bintan in around an hour. The resort area has its own dedicated ferry terminal. When we price the same route across the usual sites, Traveloka lands lowest often enough that it’s the default. Book a few weeks ahead and fly midweek and the airfare stays sensible.
Getting around
The resort zone is self-contained, and shuttles or taxis cover the short distances. Venturing to the local towns needs a hired car. Knowing how to move around here is most of the battle on a short stay.
Best time to visit
April to October is the driest and calmest stretch for beach days and boat trips. Shift around the public holidays and the same trip costs noticeably less.
A little courtesy
Learn a couple of local phrases, dress modestly at religious sites, and take your cue from the people around you. Small gestures make Bintan friendlier and smooth over the little moments.
Leave room to wander
Resist the urge to over-schedule. The best memories of Bintan are usually the unplanned ones, so leave gaps for a long lunch, a wrong turn, or an afternoon that happily runs late.
Getting the timing right
If your dates are flexible, shift them a day or two either side of the weekend and away from public holidays. On Bintan routes that small change often means noticeably cheaper flights and better-value rooms.
Keep it flexible
Book the flights and a first night or two, then leave the rest open if you can. It lets you follow a local tip, chase the good weather, or simply linger somewhere in Bintan you weren’t ready to leave.
A note on money
Carry some local cash for stalls, markets and small fares, even where cards are widely accepted. Setting a rough daily budget keeps things relaxed and makes Bintan feel like even better value than it already is.
Locking it in
With the logistics handled, the fun part begins. Once that’s settled, Traveloka and let Bintan do the rest.
